Observation of Martian Polar CO2 clouds using the MOLA and TES Instruments: An Exploratory Study
نویسنده
چکیده
The Martian polar winter clouds were examined using both Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) data and Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) data, with the hope that the chemical composition of the clouds could be determined. I begin by replicating some of the results of Ivanov and Muhleman (2001) by locating some south polar winter clouds of Mars. Locations, altitudes and brightness temperatures of the clouds suggest that they could be CO2 clouds. The spectral brightness temperature data also showed that over a cloudy region there was an odd emission centered at approx. 703 cm-1, and some unexplained apparent periodicity in the spectral Tb as well. Two possible explanations for these odd results are then proposed: CO2 ice and/or mineral dust, as well as instrumental sources of error (systemic).

Equatorial CO2 clouds on Mars: OMEGA and HRSC data analysis
One of the unique features of the Martian climate is the existence of CO2 ice clouds formed from the main atmospheric constituent. The CO2 cycle is one of the main climatic cycles of Mars, and it controls the surface pressure cycle via the formation of the seasonal CO2 frost caps on the winter pole. CO2 ice clouds were known to form at least in the very cold atmosphere of the winter pole, and w...
متن کاملTwo Mars years of clouds detected by the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter
[1] The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) instrument operated as an atmospheric lidar system as well as an altimeter, detecting absorptive clouds in northern latitudes shortly after orbit insertion in October 1997 and reflective clouds over the north polar cap at the start of the Science Phasing Orbits in March 1998. Global cloud measurements commenced with the primary mapping mission in Marc...

Introduction: The Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) [1] on the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft ranged to clouds over the course of nearly two Mars years [2] using an active laser ranging system. While ranging to the surface, the instrument was also able to measure the product of the surface reflectivity with the two-way atmospheric transmission at 1064 nm. Furthermore, the reflectivity has no...

Introduction: This study tests the proposition that data from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS TES) and Mars Orbiting Laser Altimeter (MOLA) can be used to identify stratigraphic and mineralogic layering in the wall and floor deposits of the Valles Marineris (VM). By using TES data at full resolution to identify unique local compositional signatures, our study complem...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of the winter polar wave clouds observed by Mars Global Surveyor Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter
In 1998, the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter revealed the presence of isolated or quasi-periodic thick clouds during the martian polar night. They are believed to be composed of CO2 ice particles and to be tilted against the wind direction, a feature characteristic of vertically propagating orographic gravity waves. To support that interpretation, we present here numerical simulations with a two-d...
